Central America

The CAYMAN ISLANDS are in the west Caribbean Sea with viz up to 200 feet. Lots of coral on the east and north coasts. Water temp 86F/ 30C at 100ft/30m down!. In 1978 the Cayman Islands government created the Marine Park, meaning that no marine life can be taken. Spear gun importation is strictly prohibited, and divers are encouraged not to wear gloves.

There are three islands: Grand Cayman,  Cayman Brac and Little Cayman. Little Cayman and Cayman Brac are 5 miles apart and around 85 miles north east of Grand Cayman, sparsely populated and quiet. The west coast of Grand Cayman offers all modern amenities and hotels.

 Grand Cayman
The government and dive operators are to create 5 new wreck dives from 2003. There are over 130 regular dive sites. In practice the entire coast line is worth diving. Water temperature is always between 77F - 83F!  The Turtle farm on Grand Cayman releases hundreds of Green turtles every year. Remember to take your driving license as some of the shore diving is remote.

There are walls all around Grand Cayman beginning at depths of 55-85 feet/18m-25m. The water is crystal clear.  They rear Turtles in the northwest of the island and you will see Stingrays almost anywhere, but especially at Stingray City.  Uninspiring scenery as it is a flat island.

Grand Cayman is 480 miles South of Miami  with "gleaming white sand beaches...". It is south of Cuba in the Caribbean.

There are dive centres are all along 7 mile beach. We mainly dived with Morritt's Tortuga Club & Resort - 001 345 947 7449 based on the unspoilt (=lonely) north east coast. 1997 Tortuga Divers are based at the resort and have very good standards.

Oceanography - Golden beaches, shallow coasts for between 100 metres to half a mile. Then the wall starts! It goes down to between 1000 and 6000 feet !
Currency - CI$1 = US$1.25.  Take US$ travelers cheques. All credit card purchases are in US$. Remember that you need to pay a departure tax payable at airline check in at departure.

Driving - On the left, like England. A taxi cost $60.00 from the airport to the east coast in 1997 so it was cheaper to hire a car. Seasonal Attractions - Sharks are around in October. The Pirate Week festival is in October.

Medication - The UK National Health Service is practiced. You should only need to pay for private consultations with a Doctor.
