Costa Rica Costa Rica is a land of variety that doesn't have an army, navy or air force. Sandwiched between Panama to the south and Nicaragua to the north it has desert and jungles each creating many microclimates. The temperature is an almost constant 20ºC or 68ºF all year round, The Caribbean Sea washes the north coast, the Pacific Ocean to the south. Ten percent of the worlds butterfly species live on the island. It has a coastline of around 1,800 km.

The jungle receives 14 feet/4.5 metres of rain each year. As you are never far from the jungle remember to take lots of insect repellent, and check your boots before you put them on.

The inland canals are muddy. A ridge of volcanoes run through the centre of the country: Irazú, Poás, Rincón de la Vieja and Arenal which erupts every 15 minutes. The centre of the island is mountainous and it is where most people live.

There are seven regions: Alajuela, Cartago, Guanacaste, Heredia , Limón, Puntarenas and San José, each has its own laws.
