Around January 19th 2001 a local oil tanker struck part of the reef and disgorged half a million tons of crude oil into the ocean. She is beached above sea level on the west coast of San Cristobal island. The Ecuador government ask the USA coast guard for help and spend two days negotiating who will pay for them. When they arrive on 22nd it is too late to salvage much oil and the Jessica is ready to break up. |
