The Maldives are a string of coral atolls situated to the south-west of
India.
Some of the fringing reefs are only a metre or so deep and go out to drop-offs which extend to
beyond the limit of sport diving.
Of the 1200 islands only 200 are inhabited and around 88 have facilities for tourists. Most resorts have a dive school and a dive costs about £21 (April 2000) and a boat trip £10 for all day. There is a wide variety of marine life - manta rays, angels, stingrays, dolphins, turtles and reef fish, lion fish, hammerhead and other sharks. The water is warm and clear. November to May is said to be the best time for diving. Air temperatures average 28-30°C and water temperatures range between 25 and 30°C. |

Baros Island Picture copyright and location is stated on our Marine Life pages. |
This is a tiny island (200 x 500 yards!) is 1 hour from the airport by traditional boat or half hour by speedboat. One side of the resort has a shallow coral reef, the other has a shallow lagoon. Baros Hotel is the only hotel on the island. Tame Rays can be fed by hand near the jetty.

Ari-atoll : Bathala
|
This island is situated at the eastern
side of the Ari-atoll Bathala and about 30 miles from the airport. By
Maledivian Air Taxi you need 30 minutes from the airport to the
island. The 30+ bungalows are along the beach around
the island. The resort aims at scuba divers and the food and
accommodation is good, not luxury. Halaveli Wreck: Small wreck.

Ari-atoll : Vilamendhoo |
This is a relatively new island luxury resort in the south-east of the Ari-Atoll, 50 miles from the airport. German spoken. Good for drift-dives. |
