Malta is in the Mediterranean, south of Italy. The dive centres recognise the main training organisations: BS-AC, PADI, CMAS, SSI etc. Gozo and Comino are north west of Malta. The other two Islands forming the Maltese archipelago are Filfla which is situated of the south west coast approximately 3 miles off shore. It is visible from the Blue Grotto and Ghar lapsi dive sites and is a Bird and Marine reserve requiring a permit to be able to dive around its shores. The other Island or islet is the small rock outcrop separated from Comino by the small area of water known as the Blue Lagoon and has shallow and deep reefs running off its north west side. Gozo : Comino Island : Comminotto and Filfa (no details). |

| Shore dive | Cave on the left wall of the bay.
Moray eels. Schools of fish. Octopus. Lots of Urchins, starfish and
invertebrates. A good night dive too. Depth: 9m+. Viz: 15m - 20m. Note - This is a fairly isolated spot and there have been a number of car break ins during 1999 and 2000 so try to leave someone with the car while you dive. |
Blue Grotto |

|
|
Don't bother with the Blue Grotto itself as there are too
many day trip boats - one every 10 minutes. Drop in the water in the
channel they launch from, it has a V shaped bottom, then swim out and
follow the rocks right, Some caves off to the right and a vertical chimney
starting at 20m and rising to 10m.
Watch out for the tourist boats and the concrete blocks suspended on ropes across the channel as you return. (They are to stop larger boats entering the inlet). Depth: 26m. Viz 40m. |
|
Before you attempt to go into unfamiliar environments, such as caves, caverns or wrecks, please ensure you are trained for them. The training courses exist because they are dangerous conditions. We want you to be able to return to these pages and let us know you've enjoyed your diving. |

Ghar Lapsi |

Click the picture to expand it. The entrance is the shadowed rocks, just to the left of the people walking in the sea. We usually walk down the very steep slipway and get into the water. Fin across and under the archway at 2metres/6ft rising again just to check everyone is okay. Then in we go. It's worth taking a camera to shoot the fish hiding in the shadows. There is also plant life and shoals of Damsels(?) outside. Shooting the wrasses, urchins and crabs on the return journey make this a relaxing second dive to gas off. Depth: 11m/33ft outside the caves. The depth inside is no more than 8m if you go straight ahead following entry. As you proceed you will see several large openings to your left to the open sea ~ so swim through and take the last one. If you are experienced cave divers you can turn right after the entrance. If you are not experienced cave divers, you would be a fool to go in. Viz 30m/100ft. Temp. 19C in May, 24C in Oct. |

Wreck - Coraletta,
|
Last updated May 1997 |
![]() |
Wreck in fairly good condition, starts at 7m. Viz is great - if you are there
before the others! Must use a SMB as this is in a shipping lane.
We saw, but did not disturb a really large Octopus which was hiding under
a ledge 1m long. It was doubled around and it only just fit in. Depth 21m. Viz 5m. |

| Wall dive |
Take the road to the Gozo ferry and park right at the end, on
the left. You need a diving permit to use the car park ~
see a dive centre to arrange one.
Once in the water head right. Sheer wall. Inverts. A 5
foot Madonna statue is at around 24m/75ft.
Depth 27m. Viz 20m. |

It is a
shore dive from Marfa Point with the same car park etc for the wall dive. The wreck sits upright and is in good condition. Go down the steps and head 60 degrees for
100metres/300ft. You should pass a large anchor on your left on the way over.
The top is around 25m with the sea bed at 37m. Qualified divers penetrate
the wreck. The large Moray was last seen in the lavatory so be
careful if you pose for a picture.
Temp. 19C. |

| Two tugboats |
This
one I can personally recommend. We went and talked to Manoel of Dive
Med.Co. Ltd. and found him extremely helpful, even though he knew we werent
in the market for anything he sells. Outside his shop there is a
shore dive, which consists of two wrecks of tugboats. One is at
24mtrs, the other at 21mtrs. Manoel has placed a rope
between them to swim a long once you find one, and also a rope
from the shore to assist finding them. However, this rope has
broken and is now tied to a rock at 10mtrs, for which we have
given him a bearing from the shore. He will advise anyone on
finding this rope if they go into his shop, which is in the
extreme east of Malta. He is also the man you need to speak to
if you want to dive the famous Blenheim Bomber aircraft, as
there are only a very few people who know the co-ordinates for
it. All in all a very useful contact.

This is a very large wreck and one of our favourites.
The main structure is splitting after the bridge, opening
up some of the interior. It is a 7 minute easy going
swim from shore and worth it.
