Nevis is a volcanic island in the Caribbean 2 miles southeast of St Kitts. The volcano is
in the centre of the island and reaches 3,232 feet. On his second
voyage in 1493, Columbus mistook the clouds around the peak for snow
and named the island "Nuestra Senora de las Nieves" (Our
lady of the snows). Over the years it became Nevis
(pronounced Nee-vis). The island of Nevis lies two miles to the South and is the home of
9,000 Nevitians.
There is no rainy season, but there are occasional heavy showers from August to February. Temperatures average 78F/25C all year round. |
