Pacific Islands

Niue is around 11 x 14 miles long. It is east of Fiji. It is 380 km east from Tonga and 1107 km south from Rarotonga, and part of New Zealand. It is a raised coral landmass of 259 square kilometres. Maximum height is 70 metres above the Pacific.

Water is around 29C in January and 25C in August. There are caverns and coral gardens, but no rivers, streams or  lagoon - the dives are straight into the Pacific. Visibility is usually over 30 metres and can exceed 50 metres especially during April - November (the dry season).

The airport is just south of Alofi. Coral reefs surround the whole island.

You will probably see; turtles, many reef fish, the timid Niuean sea snake, reef sharks, 'spinner'  Dolphins and Humpback Whales (June to November) on their migration from Antarctica to warmer northern waters.

Fakaalofa is Niuean for Hello.
