Aird Na Cuille

Last updated April 2000 by Anorak, Dogs Breath Diver.

Wall dive. The name means 'Majestic Meadows' in Gealic. I've never seen so many lobsters as there were in the boulders at the base of this wall. Every gap between the boulders had a lobster, most were young and about 9 inches long. There is also a scallop bed, some colourful sponges, urchins and starfish all over the place. Good for close up photos. Viz around 5m.
We dived with Puffin Dive Centre and recommend them as they know their sites, safety, have a good dive boat - the Urchin and look after you onboard. We chose accommodation in Oban and can recommend the Kelvin Hotel, Shore Street, Oban: Tel: 01631 562150 Fax: 01631 570400.

Breda - wreck

June 2007
By Dogsbreathdivers
Heinkels were on their way to bomb Liverpool but they had to choose a secondary target. They narrowly missed the Breda , but the pressure wave of the exploding bombs buckled the ship plates and it sank anyway.

It is 105metres/315ft long. There is a shot line attached to the bow at 12m/36ft. The wreck is on a slope with the stern around 30m/100ft resting on a bed of silty sand. The structure seems ok but the props have gone and there is silt in the five holds.

The first hold is flush with the deck so you might miss it and it holds parts for Sopworth Camel aircraft. Hold 2 - shotgun shells; hold 3 – tobacco bales; hold 4 – building materials and general rubbish. Apparently it held race horses for the Agar Khan originally.  Hold 5 - toilets and neatly stacked cement bags.

The bridge structure fell off and is now a little way off to port. The wreck has lots of dead mans fingers, long fans and a large dogfish of 1m/3ft. many other fish, crabs, Pollock, many squat lobsters.

Viz of 3-4 m. water temperature around 11C and a calm sea.

We used Puffin Diver Centre and would happily use them again.

A very large wreck! Several holds are open but we kept out of the engine room which has proved fatal in the past. Several good swim throughs and lots growing on it. This is a wreck which needs several dives and is worth it. Our max depth was 25m. Viz 5m/16 feet.

Shuna - wreck

Last updated April 2000 by Anorak, Dogs Breath Diver

The wreck starts at 25m with the seabed around 30.7m. It is fairly whole and upright. Lots of deadman's fingers and other things growing on it. Good wreck for photography if the viz gets better. Few fish. Viz 3-4m/13 feet. Water temp 10C.

Thesis - wreck

The top is at 12m/36ft dropping to the sea bed at 19m/60ft. The stern is at 32m/100ft. Many Pollack, wrasse and blue anemones. A good wreck to explore if you can get it to yourself!

The wreck is standing upright on a slope from 15m to 30m. Viz 4m-5m. Some large fish in the bow and holds. Worth doing again.

Please let us know what diving the Isle of Skye is like. We have heard that MacLoeds Maidens are very easy to get to and worthwhile. The pinnacles rise well above water level and form a maze of gullies underwater that inverts shelter in. Take a camera. Depth 22m to 7m.

The Rhonda - wreck

The wreck is on a steep slope with the shot line attached to the stern at 6m/18ft. The bow is at 52m/158ft. Plumose anemones almost cover the stern and reach out to you. Some jelly fish the size of small diner plates around, also sea urchins.

It’s a little broken up after 30m/150ft, splayed out over the sand and the amount of life reduces the deeper you go.

It’s worth noting that it’s very easy to go deeper than you planned as it’s such a interesting wreck, so keep an eye on your depth.

Viz 5m/15ft.

We used Puffin Divers again.

River Clyde

Gantock Rocks The Gantock Rocks offer good scenic diving suitable for all levels with gently sloping sea bed down to 35m. At the Gantock Rocks you will find squat lobster some conger and the usual crabs etc. You may even be lucky enough to get a dive with one of the many seals that inhabit the rocks, watch your fins!!

Little Cumbrae

Last updated April 2000 by Clyde Diving

This dive is around a small island with vertical drops down to about 45m possible. Here you will find much the same as at the Gantock Rocks but with the added bonus of wrasse which are in abundance.

Lochs & Piers

Last updated April 2000 by Clyde Diving

There are many unused piers along the length of the Clyde estuary that remind us of the rivers former bustle.  However lots of bottles and crockery are now found in these shallow waters near the old piers. The Lochs that run into the estuary also have piers which too are almost forgotten. Two of the better ones are at Blairmore on Loch Long and at Carrick on Loch Goil. Dare we mention "Conger Alley" at the head of Loch Long .... as seen on T.V.
