In the season from August thru October you can see 15 to 20 turtles a night come ashore and lay their eggs on Sipadan. The eggs hatch after 10 weeks and the hatchlings scramble for the sea. Sipadan is a turtle sanctuary and they are protected under Malaysian law. The island is only a few metres above sea level and thickly covered with palm trees.

Ocean currents surround the island which rises 1000 metres from the sea bed. The walls are covered with life and Hammerhead sharks school in deeper water.
