Spain

Tenerife is one of seven volcanic islands called the Canaries off the coast of Northwest Africa. There are few wrecks around due to the volcanic slopes - whatever hits the islands slip down to 1000m+. The main diving attraction are the volcanic rock structures with countless fissures and nooks and crannies to allow fish and invertebrates to hide. Some caves. All the dive sites are close to shore, with some surge. May 1998 revealed thousands of black Urchins.
There are large shoals of fish, even in the harbour. Also octopus and small shoals of trumpet fish and many Sting Rays which we fed by hand. Boat trips visit the whales and dolphins, but divers are not allowed to disturb their rest period. Spanish law requires divers to have medical insurance cover for the recompression facility.

Sea temperatures are: summer 24c, winter 19c.

Remember Tenerife is a mountain 12,000 feet high. Please take this into account if you are diving in the morning and touring in the afternoon.

For the non-diver - The quad bikes are very highly recommended ! May is the season for maintenance of the tourist facilities such as the Octopus Water park and the cable car lift to the top of the mountain. The resort of Playa de Las Americas is very tourist orientated.

I would like to strongly recommend Atlantic Divers Tenerife, www.atlantic-divers.com  for their outstanding customer service. Mick is a delightful person from Liverpool, and helped my partner, Bridget, in getting her to a stage where she would be comfortable in the water. She had met several instructors before, but had never been treated with so much respect for her own fear of the deep. She will always be grateful to Mick for helping her overcome this, as will I. john.j.murphy@tellabs.com and bmcmahon26@eircom.net

Hi, My name is Derrol Hopewell my daughters and I have been diving with Golf Divers of Santa Barbara, Golf Del Sur, Tenerife, every year since 1999. My favourite site is the ray dive which has a resident sting ray with a wing span of two meters (a big fish) it is a boat dive from Las Galletas approx 10 kilometres south west of Riena Sofia airport.
The depth is 22 meters and the water is warm with visibility of more then 15 meters. The fish congregate around a boat that was deliberately sunk to form an artificial reef. All sorts of fish and the occasional turtle populate the habitat including moray eel, barracuda, trumpet fish, wrasse, cuttlefish, and of cause several rays. It is possible to take food down with you to feed the rays, but you do get swamped by the other fish as well.
The last time I dived here, there was a lady diver who had recently been trained at Stoney Cove who was in her late 60's and wished she had started diving a lot sooner. Its a great dive for pleasure and a real treat when the old man comes to see what goodies you have to offer.
