Sri Lanka is southeast of the tip of India and diving tends to be seasonal, from November to April dive the West Coast, from May to October dive the East Coast.
There are coral reefs which can be shore dives. The far side of the reefs are drop offs for the more experienced diver.

Bentota

The Tamil Tigers are a militant faction fighting for independence. They are based in the north of the island. The tourist areas are in the south. Be particularly cautious on 24th July each year when they mark a battle in 1984. On 24th July 2001 they destroyed 7 military and 3 commercial airplanes in 6 hours and tourists had to dodge bullets in the international airport... but the diving is good.

Bentota

Last dived March 2002 by Ray Benton-Smith

Hi have just got back from Sri Lanka 15th March 2002. Did three dive sites while there all around Bentota in the South West- these were Rada, Atara caves and Siri. Water temp was 29 degrees C and vis was quite good below about 6 metres. Depths ranged from about 10 to 30 metres. Rock formations made for an interesting dive with an abundance of fish, some huge lobsters and some good swim throughs. Among others saw large Groupers, Barracuda, Lion fish, King Mackerel, Triggers and Clown fish. Used the Confifi marina dive centre (ask for Fred or Veronique) kit was a bit ragged but safe. be careful with dates as for a large part of the year vis is nfg. Regards, Ray Benton-smith.
