Dar es Salaam

Last dived in April 04 by: Simon McCloskey <smccloskey@istafrica.com>

Bloody good diving at the moment incidentally. A great wall dive this weekend with 30 dolphins on
the safety stop! Cheers, Simon

Diving takes place in and around the Dar es Salaam Marine Reserve. The reserve is designated as a reserve but in reality, it is still overfished, sometimes by dynamite! However, there is still some great diving to be done here and Dar es Salaam is often overlooked as people move quickly from inland safaris to more popular diving destinations such as Zanzibar, Pemba and Mafia. The reserve  includes the coral islands of Mbudya, Pangavini and Bongoyo. Most of the dive sites are located on the 'Fungu Yasin' reef (sand island in Swahili) or 'Big T' reef (so called because it looks like a big T on the maps). There are some good coral gardens and a few nice wall dives. There is not a massive population of fish but there is an excellent variety. Turtles and dolphins can be spotted if you're lucky. The temperature of the water is very comfortable 25-30 degrees depending on the time of year. Visibility ranges from 5-25m with an average of 10-15m. Most diving is usually mild drift dives with the boat following an SMB. There is only one commercial dive operator located just north of Dar es Salaam (Sea Breeze Marine based at Whitesands Hotel). The hotel and dive centre are about 40 minutes away from the International Airport ($20 in a taxi).
