Struma

Wreck

Last updated by Anorak - DBD Aug 2000

The Struma was built in 1868 and sank 24th February 1942 leaving Istanbul. It may have been been found by Turkish divers at a depth of  70m/210 feet. They have found a series of wrecks near Istanbul and one matches the description perfectly but identification has yet to be confirmed. An expedition is planned for later in 2000.

The 155 feet long Struma sailed with 779 Jewish passengers (272 of them women and children) trying to escape the Holocaust and reach Palestine. The passengers had been told it was a luxury liner, but the ship had been condemned by the authorities as not safe to transport cattle. The passengers were crammed on board and told they would be transferred at sea. They reached Istanbul and were stranded in filthy conditions because Britain maintained it's Palestine regulations did not cover 'enemy aliens'. There was only one survivor - David Stliar.

After the war the English, Palestine High Commissioner was threatened with assassination for his decision and wounded twice.

ZEUGMA City

On the banks of the river Euphrates in eastern Turkey was the ancient city of Zeugma, now  flooded due to a the construction of the Birecik dam by Belkis.  The old city was once the most important crossing point on the river. Founded by the Greeks in 300 BC it became a great city on the silk trail. Around 250 AD the Persians attacked the Roman City which was sacked, from then on the city declined.

Archeologists had 6 weeks to excavate the city before it was flooded. It was actually a split city. On the hillside of Seleucia was the wealth Roman part. On the other bank was Apamea where they discovered a classical Greek sewer system built around 300BC. It may not seem an exciting find, but it allows them to map the entire city. The outer city walls were 5 metres/ 17 feet wide, and the city had many houses and streets.

On the Seleucia side of the river they found substantial Roman houses with painted walls and mosaic floors of the Hellenistic period. These finds were so impressive that they were allowed several more weeks to dig. Some floors were saved and are now in the museums. There are many more villas, now under water.

You are unlikely to see anything if you are allowed to dive there. The Birecik Dam was completed and filled in 2000 and 30,000 villagers found new homes. The 'modern' village houses were mainly built of mud and quickly collapsed in the rising waters. The old city has lasted over 2000 years and it's all  buried now. It was under 3 metres/10 feet of sedimentary soil laid over the years by the flooding of the Euphrates when the archeologists arrived and there are many metres of water above them now.
