Hawaii's volcanoes have produced dramatic caves and drop-offs to dive. The water falls to 72F in winter and rises to 82F in summer and is usually clear. Hawaii is made up of 132 islands lying in the Pacific Ocean about 2400 miles southwest of mainland America and just below the Tropic of Cancer.

The Big Island of Hawaii is still growing. New lava flows form black rock reefs which are slowly gaining a veneer of corals. Of the rich and varied Marine Life you may see: Moon fish, Giant Pacific Manta rays, Cookie Cutter, Whale Sharks, Pilot Whales, Dolphins, Melon Headed Whales, Hawaiian Monk Seals, octopus and many other reef fish.
Humpback Whales pass by from December through  March. There are many wrecks around the islands with the greatest concentration around Oahu.

Inland Hawaii there are wide open spaces and cattle ranches.

See our Marine Life pages to expand the pictures and for copyright owners.

The islands were formed from west to east so Kauai and O'ahu have older coral reefs. The main islands are:

Hawaii, Kahoolawe (no details), Lanai, Maui, Hoolelua (no details), O'ahu, Kauai , Niihau and Kaula (no details).

There is another island growing at present called Loihi, but this is still three thousand  feet below sea level. It has extensive thermal vents as hot as 220 degrees... and is slowly growing.
