It is located in the northeast part of the Caribbean, a little less than 200 miles east of Puerto Rico. French Saint Martin is part of the French West Indies (specifically, the Overseas Department of Guadeloupe, occasionally referred to as the French Antilles), and the Dutch side, called Sint Maarten (sometimes misspelled Sint Marteen or Saint Maarten) is part of the Netherlands Antilles (sometimes referred to as the Dutch Antilles). More generally, St. Martin and the other northern Lesser Antilles are referred to as the Leeward Islands, because the prevailing winds generally blow east. The island has a rich heritage, beautiful beaches and a variety of beautiful dive sites.
